Here is the phone call we don't want to take

Imagine your loved one calling CAPT Headquarters after you’ve passed away in your retirement years, asking for insurance-benefit assistance as directed, only to be told that -- because you did not carry your CAPT membership into retirement -- the union is unable to assist with these final needs.

CAPT Headquarters received just such a call today. We at CAPT again urgently remind members: If you are thinking of retiring or have just retired in the past few weeks, please call CAPT Headquarters if you want to continue these benefits.

Each time we are notified of a retirement through the State Controller’s Office, we follow up with a reminder letter and retiree membership application to the member. For your insurance to continue after retirement – for only $5 per month – you must return this application or contact CAPT Headquarters at (800) 677-2278 within 31 days of the last day of the month in which you retired. If you fail to do so, your policy for $5,000 term-life benefits and additional $5,000 for accidental death/dismemberment benefits will lapse and cannot be reinstated.

“These types of calls are painful on both a professional and personal level,” said CAPT Office Manager Debi Loger, who oversees the insurance-benefit program. “I ask everyone who is thinking about or planning retirement or who has received one of my reminder letters to contact me immediately. I’m happy to help!”
